FAQ

Your questions answered!

What is an LBJ?

LBJ is jargon used by birders--especially beginning birders--for those difficult-to-identify brown things, aka "little brown jobs." Think sparrows and finches. Think high up in shadowy trees or flitting about through tall grass. For more...

Why can't I find a copy of The LBJ ?

The first issue of The LBJ  will be published in the summer of 2008. Submit, subscribe, and stay tuned!

Do you really only publish work about birds?

Well, yes, but the avian allusions in The LBJ  need not be overt. Wings, feathers, eggs--these things qualify, too.

Do you review scholarly articles?

We do not review articles strictly academic in nature.  However, The LBJ  is keenly interested in literary essays and narrative scholarship--hybrid works of reportage, scholarship, and memoir written in a relatively lyrical style.

What is your submission deadline or review period?

For the inaugural  issue, the Sparrow Prize contest and submission deadline is May 15.

For the '08-'09 academic year, The LBJ 's review period is August 15-April 15.

Can I submit via email?

Yes, and it's encouraged. Submissions and a cover letter, including contact information and a brief bio, should be sent as MS Word attachments to submissions@literarybirdjournal.org. Please indicate the contents of your submission in the subject line in the following manner: Genre: “Title” (example: Creative Nonfiction: “Walking Among Mixed Flocks”)
