Prose and Poetry
The LBJ seeks previously unpublished submissions of creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, literary journalism, and narrative scholarship (combining traditional scholarship and creative writing) of avian theme. Work that goes beyond celebration and observation to suggest new ways to think and write about birds is of primary interest. The journal does not review or publish work strictly academic in nature.
The LBJ's review period is August 15 to April 15 (postmark dates). Unsolicited work sent outside this period will not be read. Submissions and a cover letter, including contact information and a brief biography, should be sent as one MS Word attachment by e-mail to submit@literarybirdjournal.org, or by snail mail with an SASE to:

If submitting by e-mail, please indicate the contents of the submission in the subject line in the following manner: Genre: “Title” (example: Poetry: “Barn Owl,” “Downy Feather”).
Submit one piece of no more than twenty-five double-spaced, single-side pages of prose and/or five poems at one time. Each poem should be on a separate page, but, if e-mailed, in a single attachment. The LBJ adheres to The Chicago Manual of Style.
Allow at least four months for a response, after which send an e-mail of inquiry. Please do not send a second submission until we have responded to your first.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted so long as they are clearly marked as such and withdrawn immediately if accepted elsewhere.
Visual Art
The LBJ is looking for portfolios of visual art to showcase in its full-color insert and as illustration in its pages. The journal is not so much interested in travel photography or bird portraiture as it is work of surprising artistic and avian vision. Send no more than three prospective pieces as low-resolution jpegs, along with a brief biography, to submit@literarybirdjournal.org, subject line: “visual art.”
Queries
The LBJ wishes to publish cutting-edge works of literary journalism about birds, their habitats, and the people working with and around them. Please send a query explaining the nature and significance of the story proposed, as well as a writing sample representative of the style in which you plan to work, in one MS Word attachment to editor@literarybirdjournal.org.
Book Reviews
The LBJ prints reviews of primarily literary works with a major focus on birds published within a year of each issue. All inquires about books for review, writing a review, etc., should be sent to reviews@literarybirdjournal.org.
